Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the ability to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
