The buzz surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team is likely building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
