European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
